When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far.
Removable Retainers
Your upper retainer is a clear plastic removeable retainer. You must be very careful when handling your upper retainer, as they are fragile and costly to replace. You are given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep it in this case when you are not wearing it! To clean your retainers, brush them with toothpaste using warm water, and once a week soak them in a denture cleaner to keep fresh.
Your retainers should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. Your retainer should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard . After 4 days of full-time wear, you may wear the retainer strictly at night only.
Permanent Lingual Retainers
Your lower retainer is a permanent metal bar that is attached with bonding on your lower cuspid to cuspid. It is very important to keep this retainer clean. Brushing and flossing of the lower retainer will be required daily. Be cautious of biting and chewing anything hard. If you should ever feel like the retainer has broken or has been bent, please call us as soon as possible.
